Strategic Collaboration Expands Bayanat and Yahsat’s Global Earth Observation Capabilities, Strengthening UAE’s Leadership in the Space Sector
Abu Dhabi, UAE — Bayanat AI PLC (ADX: BAYANAT), a leading provider of AI-powered geospatial solutions, and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company PJSC (ADX: Yahsat), the UAE’s flagship satellite solutions provider, have successfully launched the UAE’s first Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. This milestone was achieved on August 16, 2024, in partnership with ICEYE, a pioneer in SAR satellite technology for Earth observation, persistent monitoring, and natural disaster solutions.
This landmark event marks a significant advancement in the UAE’s Earth Observation capabilities. The Bayanat-owned SAR satellite, launched in collaboration with Yahsat, was deployed via Exolaunch and successfully lifted off aboard SpaceX’s Transporter 11 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA. The satellite has successfully established communication and is now in the early stages of routine operations.
The launch of the UAE’s first SAR satellite represents a pivotal achievement for both Bayanat and Yahsat. As part of the Earth Observation Space Program, this satellite is the first in a comprehensive SAR constellation designed to deliver high-resolution, persistent monitoring solutions. Unlike traditional optical imaging satellites, SAR technology allows for the capture of high-resolution images regardless of weather conditions or lighting, providing continuous monitoring capabilities. ICEYE’s radar antenna technology, known for its ability to cover larger geographical areas and provide higher-resolution images of smaller regions, will add significant value to customers.
The Earth Observation Space Program exemplifies Bayanat and Yahsat’s commitment to advancing the UAE’s space sector, fostering local talent, and establishing sovereign satellite data acquisition and processing capabilities. This successful launch is a testament to the UAE’s forward-looking vision as outlined in its National Space Strategy 2030. Through this collaborative effort, Bayanat and Yahsat are positioned as leaders in the region’s rapidly growing space ecosystem, driving innovation to support national and commercial interests.
The satellite launch is the latest in an ongoing partnership between Bayanat, Yahsat, and ICEYE. Established in 2023, the Earth Observation Space Program aims to build national satellite remote sensing and Earth Observation capabilities within the UAE by developing a SAR satellite constellation. This constellation of LEO satellites will provide a consistent data stream for end-to-end SAR applications, leveraging Yahsat’s upstream and midstream capabilities alongside Bayanat’s downstream expertise.
These orbiting satellites will revisit the Middle East frequently, enabling Bayanat and Yahsat to deliver near real-time, high-definition images of conditions on the ground across the region and beyond. This strategic initiative enhances the companies’ ability to provide timely and accurate geospatial insights, essential for applications such as disaster management, maritime surveillance, and smart mobility.
