Muscat, Oman — In a landmark step for the Sultanate’s emerging space sector, Oman has officially signed an agreement for the design, manufacturing, and launch of OMANSAT-1, the country’s first-ever communications satellite.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Chair of the National Space Program and Head of the Project Management Office, who described the moment as a “milestone for Oman’s space journey” and emphasized the project’s significance as a strategic investment in national capabilities, digital sovereignty, and the long-term development of Oman’s space economy.
The initiative is the result of years of planning and coordination among national entities and international partners. The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTIT) played a central role, with continuous guidance from the Minister and strategic leadership from H.E. Ali Al Shidhani, PhD, who led the negotiations for the project.
Space Communication Technologies SPC will serve as the project operator and execution arm, working closely with global partner Airbus, which will support the design and manufacturing of the satellite.
Officials noted that the OMANSAT-1 project strengthens Oman’s position as a future regional leader in advanced space technologies and marks a major leap forward for the national space program.
Further developments and implementation milestones are expected in the coming months.
