The United Arab Emirates has reached a major milestone in its space ambitions with the successful orbital deployment of Altair-1, the nation’s first commercially built satellite. Launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base, Altair-1 deployed successfully, established signal acquisition, and is currently undergoing nominal in-orbit commissioning.
Mission Overview & Capabilities
Altair-1 serves as the inaugural spacecraft for the planned 10-satellite Altair Earth-observation constellation, with the remaining nine satellites scheduled for rollout through 2027. Each satellite is built to process data autonomously in space using onboard NVIDIA GPUs, turning raw observations into actionable intelligence within minutes.

To support real-time monitoring across multiple domains, each spacecraft carries a five-sensor payload featuring optical, shortwave infrared, thermal, hyperspectral, and radio frequency capabilities. When the full constellation is operational, it will provide a global revisit time of approximately four hours. This high-frequency coverage is designed to support disaster response, maritime surveillance, environmental monitoring, infrastructure tracking, and national security operations.
Manufacturing & Ecosystem Impact
The satellite was designed, integrated, assembled, and tested at Orbitworks’ 50,000-square-foot facility in KEZAD, Abu Dhabi. As the Middle East’s first commercial satellite production factory, the site features specialized cleanrooms, testing chambers, and equipment capable of producing up to 50 satellites per year.
Orbitworks operates as a joint venture between UAE-based Marlan Space, a subsidiary of IHC, and Loft Orbital. Commercial access to the constellation is structured to allow either full satellite ownership or data-as-a-service licensing. Initial anchor customers include several French government entities, the Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy, and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, with discussions underway to expand capacity to additional global clients.
Strategic Vision
This deployment represents a core step toward a broader $1 billion, 50-satellite AI constellation program supported by international industry partners. According to leadership from the UAE Space Agency and Orbitworks, the project marks a fundamental transition for the UAE from a consumer of space technology to an active manufacturer and exporter. Guided by the National Space Strategy 2031 alongside initiatives such as Operation 300bn and Make it in the Emirates, the program aims to position the UAE among the world’s top ten space economies.
