Saudi Space Agency and Japans JAXA Sign Strategic Accord in Riyadh

The Saudi Space Agency has signed a comprehensive memorandum of cooperation with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to expand international collaboration in space science and the peaceful exploration of outer space. Formalized during executive diplomatic sessions in Riyadh, the strategic agreement was executed by Saudi Space Agency Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi and JAXA President Dr. Hiroshi Yamakawa. The alliance establishes a structured framework for knowledge exchange, joint technological development, and bilateral research initiatives across the Middle Eastern and Asian space ecosystems.

Technical Pillars and Bilateral Research Tracks

The bilateral partnership encompasses multiple technical and scientific domains aimed at building long-term capability across both agencies. Operational tracks include the deployment of satellite technologies, advanced remote sensing platforms, and microgravity research. Both organizations will also cooperate on deep-space scientific research, planetary exploration frameworks, orbital experiments, specialized propulsion systems, launch vehicle technology, and advanced aerospace hardware manufacturing. To sustain ecosystem growth, the accord incorporates professional technical workshops, educational campaigns, and specialized training frameworks designed to upskill local engineering talent.

Strategic Integration with Vision 2030

Partnering with JAXA directly supports Saudi Arabia’s overarching economic transformation goals established under Vision 2030, which prioritizes technological diversification and space sector localization. Facilitating direct access to Japanese aerospace operational expertise allows Saudi researchers and engineers to integrate into international space missions and satellite development pipelines. The joint research activities enable scientists to exchange specialized data, test experimental space components, and refine satellite monitoring applications, combining Japan’s spaceflight experience with Saudi Arabia’s expanding space investment strategy.
